- Avoid texting or talking on the phone while driving.
- Drive within posted speed limits (or slower if driving conditions are comprised).
- Use turn signals.
- Keep a safe distance between their car and the car in front of them. In general, drivers should keep 10 feet between vehicles for every 10 mph. For instance, if you are driving 30 miles per hour, you should keep 30 feet between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. If you are driving 60 mph, the distance should be 60 feet. Safe driving distance can also be calculated by traveling at least 3 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. Driving distance should be increased – doubled in some cases – when driving conditions are compromised, such as during rain, snow, or fog. If you are being tailgated, move to a different lane, if possible.
