  • When driving on snowy or icy roads, reduce your speed and allow plenty of room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Brake gently to avoid skidding.
  • Make sure that your headlights are on, even during the daytime.
  • Maintain a clean and clear windshield.
  • Avoid using cruise control.
  • Use extra caution when driving on bridges, overpasses, and infrequently traveled roads as they can freeze first.
  • Do not pass snow plows and sanding trucks as the drivers of these vehicles have limited visibility and the road is often more treacherous in front of them than behind them.
  • Avoid texting, emailing, talking on a cell phone, or other forms of distracted driving.
  • Use preventive driving techniques, such as using turn signals before switching lanes.
  • Prepare for winter driving by checking the vehicle’s battery, tire treat, windshield wipers, washer fluid levels, and antifreeze.
  • If your car becomes stuck or stalls, do not panic. Stay in the vehicle and put bright markers on the antenna to alert other drivers of your presence.
  • Always wear a seat belt.

Motorists aren’t the only ones who are susceptible to dangerous road conditions during the winter. Pedestrians should take their time when walking, take slower and shorter steps, wear boots or footwear with rubber tread for traction, and exercise extreme caution when walking on the side of the road during and after a snowstorm since unshoveled sidewalks and slippery roads can increase the risk of a pedestrian auto accident.
