Chicago fire department truck in car accident

by | Sep 5, 2013 | Uncategorized

Most Chicago drivers associate police cars, rescue vehicles and fire trucks with the brave men and women who serve our communities each day in an effort to keep people safe. When drivers see these vehicles traveling on local roadways and with their lights flashing, they quickly move out of the way so that others may be assisted by the crews traveling in the rescue vehicles.

From time to time, however, rescue vehicles are involved in car accidents just like private cars and trucks. A Chicago Fire Department truck crashed into the side of a car and trapped an occupant of that car in the automobile. It is unknown if the truck was responding to a call at the time of the collision. The accident occurred at the intersection of Austin Boulevard and Bloomingdale Avenue in the late morning. A second vehicle was also struck by the fire truck and as a result of the collision three people were injured and taken to local hospitals.

While most vehicle accidents require private citizens to work out the details of their insurance, damages and other associated costs, accidents with municipal and city vehicles can require different negotiations. Though any individual who is injured may be entitled to compensation for their damages, city governments and their employees can receive special protections under the law that make suing them different from private parties.

The victims in this accident fortunately all escaped serious injury but will have to address any medical bills and other hospital costs they incurred from their treatment. In addition to those charges, they may also face bills for having their cars and other items of personal property repaired. As accident investigators look into exactly why this incident occurred, Chicago area drivers may be more mindful of the public rescue vehicles they see on the roads.
