The Secrets to Driving Kids Around Safely [infographic]

Protecting Children While Driving

Proper tethering is one of the most important factors to check on a child's car seat. Nearly 1/2 of forward-facing car seats are not properly installed and can come loose in an automobile accident. Ensuring that the seat is properly tethered and that the latches in the seat are solid helps keep the seat firmly in place.

It is also advisable not to keep heavy objects within the car cabin while transporting a child. Heavy objects can act as missiles in an accident that can cause serious injury or death. Keeping these items in the trunk or secured under a net is the most advisable practice.

Parents should also resist the urge to install mirrors in front of their child's rear-facing car seat. These divert the driver's attention away from the road which can lead to a distracted driving accident. Without question, the best way to protect the child's safety is to keep both eyes focused on the road.

Engaging in phone conversations is another unsafe driving behavior that parents should avoid while driving. This distracts motorists and can cause drivers to miss events on the roadway such as cars entering intersections, cars departing from lanes, etc.

When to Avoid Driving

There are times when it is simply too dangerous to drive. Snowstorms, ice storms, heavy rains, etc. are all times when everything but emergency driving should be avoided. In addition to the heightened risk of accidents, motorists can be stuck in the elements while waiting for help and this can be just as dangerous as a collision.

It is also a good idea to pull over if an infant or toddler becomes disgruntled and begins to wail. Waiting for this distracting behavior to subside can improve concentration and focus which enhances safety.

Driving should also be avoided during major holidays such as New Year's Eve, Halloween night, 4th of July. These days typically have higher rates of drunk driving and an increased risk of automobile accidents often resulting in the need to retain the services of a Chicago car accident attorney.
