Toyota Faces Another Massive Recall

2009 Toyota Corolla

Toyota has announced that it will be issuing another massive recall - this time recalling more than a million of its vehicles due to defective airbags and faulty windshield wipers in two separate recalls. The first recall - the airbag recall - is the largest, affecting approximately 752,000 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars from the 2003 and 2004 model years.

The airbag recall is due to potential circuit shortage problems in the airbag modules for the supplemental restraint system in certain 2003 and 2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix models. A short in the circuit could create an abnormal flow of current, increase heat, and damage the circuit chips, which can potentially result in the deployment of the front airbags and/or front seat belt pretensioners without warning.

According to this CBS News article, a statement from a Toyota spokesman indicated that there have been 18 injuries and two auto accidents in the U.S. related to the airbag issue.

The other recall involves 2006 through 2012 model year Lexus IS luxury sedans with potentially defective windshield wipers that many become inoperable. The front wiper arm in the recalled vehicles may not be sufficiently tight, and could become restricted or inoperative by heavy snow that builds up on the windshield. According to Toyota, no Injuries or accidents involving the defective wipers have been reported.

What to Do If You Have a Recalled Vehicle

Owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified of the recall by mail in the near future. The notification will include instructions to take the recalled vehicle to any authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer for repairs, to be performed at no charge. Consumers can also contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 and Lexus at 1-800-255-3987 with any questions or concerns. Information is also available at  and

Auto recalls should not be taken lightly since auto defects - even seemingly minor defects - can result in auto accidents, serious injuries and damages, and deaths. For instance, auto defects can cause:

  • Automobile rollovers/stability defects

  • Inability to stop

  • Unintended acceleration

  • Tire blowouts

  • Roof collapse

  • Seat back collapse

  • Glass breakage

  • Airbag failure

  • Seatbelt failure

  • Door latch failure

  • Gasoline fire
