Medicated Driving Is Just As Dangerous As Drunk Driving

impaired driving.jpegWhen you hear about people who are injured or killed by intoxicated motorists, one of the first things that may cross your mind is alcohol. Sadly, it is not the only substance that impairs drivers. Many people who operate their vehicles in Chicago while intoxicated are under the influence of medications.

Car accidents involving prescriptions drugs are becoming more common. Because so many people rely on prescription drugs and over-the-counter products, it can be hard for you to know when you are driving near an intoxicated motorist. Signs of medication impairment include:
    • Anxiety
    • Vision changes
    • Nausea
    • Delayed reaction times
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Sleepiness

Recognizing these signs in drivers is not always easy, especially when you are driving. Not all medications cause the same reactions in people. Everyone metabolizes them differently. When alcohol, drugs and other substances become factors, the side effects can become more intense. If you keep an eye out for drivers who are not very alert and exhibiting some of the above signs, you can reduce the chances of harm coming to you and your passengers.

      Different substance, same outcome

Injuries sustained in car accidents involving medicated drivers are just as life-altering as drunk driving accidents. Accident victims can end up with serious injuries and face long recoveries. Families can be left trying to pick up the pieces of their lives after fatal accidents.

If you ever receive medications or decide to use store-bought drugs and supplements, be mindful of your body's response to them. Read all instructions on the labels. If you feel tired, odd, not yourself or impaired in any way, avoid driving until you feel normal again. Becoming more aware of how medication and other substances can your affect driving skills and those of other motorists can help you to stay out of harm's way.
