Are Your Medications Safe?

Medicines of some kind, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, are in nearly every household in the country. Medicines are necessary to the health and well-being of many people by curing illnesses, alleviating pain, and promoting good health. But are the medicines that you are taking safe?

Nationwide outbreaks, reports of serious side effects, and massive product recalls have caused many people to question the safety and efficacy of the medicines that line their cabinet shelves. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now considering a regulatory change regarding generic drug labeling in light of recent reports of ineffectiveness and dangerous side effects associated with certain generic drugs.

One of the major sources of concern lately is the role of compounding pharmacies in the production of medications. In the past year, hundreds of people have become ill and more than 50 people have died as a result of a meningitis outbreak caused by tainted steroid drugs produced at a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts.

And now two more compounding pharmacies are recalling their drugs. Last month, the FDA warned doctors that another compounding pharmacy is recalling dozens of lots of the Roche drug Avastin after receiving reports of eye infections among patients. The AP reported that, according to the FDA, Clinical Specialties received five reports of eye infections from doctors who used Avastin to treat macular degeneration and, as a result, was recalling 40 lots of the drug that were distributed to doctors' offices in Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Indiana between December 18, 2012 and March 2013.

Additionally, ABC News reported that Med Prep Consulting recalled 83 different kinds of drugs after it found particles floating in five bags of compounded magnesium sulfate solution that was intended for intravenous use. The particles were later determined to be mold.

According to the AP, the FDA has increased inspections of compounding pharmacies since the nationwide meningitis outbreak last year. Additionally, Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, the head of the FDA, has called on Congress to enact legislation that will enhance regulation of compounding pharmacies. Last fall, federal lawmakers held Congressional hearings regarding government oversight and enforcement authority over compounding pharmacies.
